You can change the nameservers for a domain registered with BinaryLane yourself in mPanel, with between 1 and 13 nameservers. Changing nameservers moves where your DNS is answered; it does not change where the domain is registered. Before you switch, prepare the records at the new DNS provider: see Choosing the Right Nameservers for Your Domain.

Change the nameservers in mPanel

  1. Open Domains in mPanel and select the domain.
  2. Open the Nameservers tab. If it says the domain is locked, unlock it under Domain Lock first.
  3. Enter each nameserver on its own row. Use Add Nameserver for more rows (up to 13) and the bin icon to remove one. At least one nameserver is required.
  4. Click Update Nameservers. A "Nameservers Updated" confirmation shows once the registry has accepted them.

Changes at the registry usually take effect within a few hours, though cached answers elsewhere can take up to 48 hours to expire.

To use BinaryLane DNS hosting, enter ns1.binarylane.com.au, ns2.binarylane.com.au and ns3.binarylane.com.au. Domains registered or transferred with our default nameservers get all three; older registrations may show only two, which works and needs no change. See Can you host my DNS records? for the addresses and supported record types.

If the change is rejected

  • An error under a nameserver row: that entry is not a valid hostname, for example a URL, an IP address or a name without a dot. Correct the row and click Update Nameservers again.
  • "The registry rejected the name servers: Data management policy violation." The domain's registry refused the new set, most often because one of the nameservers does not exist yet or does not answer for the domain. Check that each nameserver is spelt correctly and is already set up at your DNS provider to answer for the domain, then click Update Nameservers again.
  • "The registry rejected the glue record <host> (<ip>): Parameter value policy error." The registry refused that host name and IP address pair. Check that the host is under the domain itself (such as ns1.example.com for example.com) and that the IP is a valid public address.
