2. Billing and Pricing

You are only billed for the resources allocated to your server as long as it has them - for example, if you increase your server's memory over the weekend, then decrease memory after the weekend, you'll only be billed for those extra resources while they were allocated to your server.


3. Data Preservation

No data will be lost when you change your plan. The only thing that will change is the amount of resources available to your server. The IP address, configurations, and contents of the disk will remain intact.


No reinstall or reconfiguration is needed: the operating system, its configuration and your data stay as they are. The reboot that applies the new resources (see 4.1) is the only interruption to service.


4. Requirements and Limitations

4.1 Reboot Requirement


Important: Changing memory, CPU cores, and disk space requires a reboot of the VPS to effect the change.


4.2 Downgrade Requirements

Downgrading your plan or storage requires enough free storage space on the current plan to accommodate the new plan. The system will not allow you to downgrade if there is not enough free space.


Recommendation: It is recommended to back up your data before downgrading your plan to avoid data loss due to insufficient storage space.


4.3 Downgrade Example

Example of a downgrade that requires enough free storage space:

If you are on a 4GB plan with 100GB storage and you want to downgrade to a 2GB plan with 50GB storage, you will need to have less than roughly 40GB of data stored on your current plan to accommodate downgrading to the 50GB storage plan. This is because the operating system services and any applications running on the server usually create some temporary files that take up space on the disk when the server is online.


4.4 Plan Change Fails with "Error resizing OS partition"

This error means the plan change could not resize the disk because its partitions were changed from the original layout inside the operating system, for example a custom partition layout or a non-standard format. Automated resizing cannot handle these layouts. The server itself is unaffected; only the plan change did not go through. It is not caused by a lack of free space, so freeing up space will not fix it.

  1. Consolidate the partitions and return the filesystem to its original state, as it was before the partitioning changes were made. This is done inside your server, for example from the Finnix recovery environment (Recovery > Rescue Disk in mPanel) and the Rescue Console.
  2. Retry the plan change.

For future disk changes, use the Disk Allocation settings for the server in mPanel (Settings > Disks) rather than partitioning inside the operating system. Allocating disk that way keeps the layout compatible with automated resizing when you change plans.


5. Plan Types

5.1 Standard VPS Plans

  • Memory, storage, and IPs can be modified independently of each other
  • You can upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time
  • Full customisation flexibility
  • VPS plans go up to 64 GB of memory. For more, dedicated server plans go up to 128 GB (see 5.4)


5.2 CPU Optimised Plans

  • Provide dedicated threads that boost to 4GHz+
  • Designed for processor-intensive workloads
  • Balanced CPU, memory, and storage allocation
  • Upgrade/downgrade only in tandem with CPU, memory, and storage
  • Storage is not freely customisable: each CPU Optimised plan offers a choice of two storage sizes, subject to availability, and you can move between those two options for your plan level
  • For more storage than your plan level offers, change to a different plan level. Standard VPS plans offer broader storage customisation


5.3 HDD Storage Plans

  • Designed for high-capacity slow archival purposes
  • Upgrade/downgrade only in tandem with memory and storage
  • Cost-effective for large storage requirements


5.4 Dedicated Server Plans

  • Fixed configuration with limited customisation options
  • Each plan has fixed memory and CPU cores
  • Dedicated server plans go up to 128 GB of memory
  • Two storage size options per plan
  • Can upgrade/downgrade storage between the two options
  • Cannot change memory or CPU cores within the same plan
  • Can upgrade/downgrade between different dedicated server plans
  • Can change from dedicated server to VPS plans (or vice versa)
  • Plan changes require enough free storage space


6. Adding CloudLinux to a cPanel Server

CloudLinux OS Shared Pro can be added to an existing cPanel server from the Change Plan page. The server is not wiped: the IP address, configuration and disk contents remain intact, and a reboot applies the change.

Change Plan adds the CloudLinux licence. Installing the CloudLinux software on the server is then up to you, once the licence is active.
